Strict Laws

bryan139 Jul 27, 2004 07:29 PM

I've seen a few posts on the strict NJ laws. What exactly is everybody referring to? No venomous. NO anacondas. Am i missing something? When I did all the looking up on permits it didn't seem too bad to me. There were more regulations on birds than herps. NO baboons was a good one, but the herps didn't seem very bad. I have to be missing something which means I'm in danger of a stiff fine so somebody please fill me in.

NJ does not alow anyone to have many snake species as well as lizard species. And Most you need a permit for. Its so bad you can't even have a pet turtle without permits. Its rediculous and you obviously are not into herps that much. One thing that i fine most outlandish is that no species of crocodilian can EVER be owned be anyone in NJ. Even the smaller caiman that can get like 4ft maybe 5ft. There isn't even a permit you can get for it you'd have to like herps to understand the way we feel i guess....

WHAT SNAKE CAN YOU NOT HAVE BESIDES VENOMOUS OR AN ANACONDA? WHAT LIZAR BESIDES BEADED AND GILA MONSTERS? THE CAIMAN IS A GOOD POINT THOUGH. MAYBE THERE'S MORE LAWS THAN I KNOW OF. I SUPPOSE YOU COULD LIST ENDANGERED SPECIES IF YOU WANT BUT THAT MAKES SENCE TO ME. THEY'RE ENDANGERED, I WOULDN'T WANT ANY IDIOT ON A WHIM NOT KNOWING WHAT THEY'RE DOING KILLING OFF ENDANGERED SPECIES. (OR ANY SPECIES FOR THAT MATTER). NOT TO SAY YOU'RE AN IDIOT, BUT YOU KNOW AS WELL AS I DO THERE ARE TONS IN THIS HOBBY. I GUESS MAYBE I DON'T THINK IT'S THAT BAD BECAUSE I LOOK AT STATES LIKE NEW YORK TRYING TO OUTLAW ALL CONSTRICTORS INCLUDING BALL PYTHONS OR PLACES LIKE ALLENTOWN PA FOR WHOM KING SNAKES ARE A GREY AREA BECAUSE THEY CONSIDER THEM CONSTRICTORS. SOMETHING TO DO WITH SIZE IN THE ALLENTOWN ORDINANCE, 3 FEET OR SOMETHING. BCC'S DON'T NEED PERMITS IN JERSEY. AND YOU CAN HAVE, WHAT IS IT, 3 OF WHATEVER ON A PERMIT FOR $10 A YEAR. THEY SEEM REASONABLE TO ME IS WHAT I'M SAYING. NOT THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD, BUT BY FAR NOT THE WORST.

AND WHILE I'M AT IT, DID YOU SIGN THE PETITION AGAINST THE NEW YORK BAN? IF NY IS ALLOWED TO PASS THIS LAW DON'T THINK NEW JERSEY WON'T LOOK INTO FOLLOWING THEIR LEAD. OR OTHER STATES AS WELL. GET YOUR MOM, WIFE, KIDS, ANYBODY YOU CAN TO SIGN IT.

i have been away so sorry for not responding sooner... i haven't been really interested in snakes until recently so i'm not sure on all the laws about them... as for the lizards i know for most monitors you need permitts its not just the venomous Herps out there that are ban. As for the caimans status in the wild well.. they are doing quite well and are not endangered, however there are many species of crocodilian that are. All crocodilians are listed on the CITES I or II list depending on there status. all were put under CITES just for more protection i guess but i can assure you Curver's Dwarf Caiman as well as Smooth Fronted Caiman are doing well in the wild. Neither are being hunter for skin because it they have such large scutes and the skin just is not sawt after.
sorry for the long post.

You can own Camains, you just have to have experience and a good reason! I have 2 smooth fronts. The state checked out my background and came and exmained my setup before they gave it to me though....

In addition, they also ban ALL rear-fanged snakes. This rules out many species that are otherwise considered harmless. Also, all larval salamanders, axolotls, even mudpuppies are illegal because they could be mistaken for the larval form of the tiger salamander (I can see the larval salamanders...though I think it would be better if they approached it like the corn snake and allowed albino/leucistic axolotls...but the mudpuppies??). And one other thing...are anacondas now banned again? I remember not too long back they were allowed after being banned before. Bah...it's almost too hard to keep track.

snakehound223 Sep 13, 2004 07:13 PM

Anacondas are still banned and rumor is that they are also going to Ban Retics and Rock pythons also.....

dravenxavier Sep 13, 2004 09:12 PM

When were they banned again? I remember I think it was about a year ago they were allowed back in. I really wish they would make this all a bit more public...not even the website says anything anymore about anacondas or even the aquatic salamanders

BRYAN139 Sep 15, 2004 11:52 AM

There are add ons listed on the NJHS website under the permit part. It doesn't list dates and can get a little vague but it's there. Lists some rear fanged and the anaconda among others.
