Diamondback Water Snake

lanceheads Jun 22, 2003 06:50 PM

Anyone know about when Diamondbacks give birth?
What time in the summer generally, etc.
I have a large female that looks like she is gravid and she shed 4 days ago.
I appreciate any advice, etc.

Like most larger bodied Nerodia, Diamondback females generally ovulate during May and June. Fertilization is followed by a 3 month gestation period so babies would be expected between late July and Spetember, depending on when the female ovulated. Signs of impending birth include refusal of food and distended skin in the posterior half of the snake. I wouldn't expect babies for a couple months but please report back with what happens with your snake. Good luck.
