panther question

kod130 Jul 27, 2004 09:18 PM

I have just bred my panther chameleons and wanted to know about how long does it take for the female to show her gravid color and i have read it is like a grayish color is this correct? anymore info on breeding would be helpful like links to care sheets and personal expericences. I had a hard time finding breeding care sheets.

Your female can show gravid coloration as soon as copulation is done. But usually it happens within a day or two. As for gravid coloration, i have never seen a gravid female turning. Gravid panther coloration is just like her sexualy mature bright colors, with the only difference being her bars are a lor darker and she sort of has a dark/black "outline". Good luck with the whole breeding process. I just had a baby pop out of its egg today.

thanks for the info. should i breed her again if she dosen't show any signs of being gravid? congrats on your first baby. how long did it take for your female to lay her eggs and how long has it been since u started incubating? do you know of any sites with breeding info?

i don't see why you shouldn't try again, if the female doesn't mind. But wait for a few days, as she might show her gravid coloration a little later. As for how long did my female take to lay her eggs? some clutches has been as long as 45 days, and some as short as 18 days. I ttook about 6 months and 3 weeks for the first baby to hatch. One more of my eggs is hatching and one more sweating currently.

about sites with breeding info...hmm...i really cant recall ever reading any breeding info on websites, but that information is readily available on most chameleon books, and probabaly forums like this one. Jim Nozaki's site has a little bit of info.
It is www.Amazingbluereptiles.com. I'd say you have everythign right so far, just wait for her gravid coloration. Good luck!

thanks for the info again. thanks for the site but thats the only one i found on breeding also. Its been 3 days since i bred her and she is like a dark orange/brownish color like the vines, does this sound like a gravid color? what kind of dirt do you use for her to lay her eggs in anything special?

That kinda sounds like gravid coloration, but if u could take a pic, that would eb even better. Then We can tell for sure. As for the soil, u can use soil or sand, or a mixture of both, but i prefer just to use soil. Imagine sand in your eyes versus soil. you get the picture. Use soil tat is not dry, jusy wet enough that the female can create a burrow in it. Also, press the soil down with your hands to pack it in tight enough, so that when the female burrows, it wont cave in.
