Genetic "morph" material for California kingsnakes?

emroul Jul 27, 2004 10:23 PM

Hi everyone,

I am interested in starting something up with a couple different California kingsnake phases or "color morphs". I understand genetics and how they work (mainly from breeding Python regius), but my question is basically what is each morph (recessive, co-dom, dom)? I really like banded or 50/50's, striped, dot-dash, and albino. I know the banded is the wild type, but as far as albinos, bananas, etc., what are the genetics of these morphs? Which ones are simple recessive, dominant? I just want to know what I can expect from my breedings.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you know of a website (that I cannot seem to find) that has a chart or something on the information for each morph, I would really appreciate the help.

Thank you,
Jennifer

Recessive genes in California Kingsnakes:

*Albino (Blizzards carry the same albino gene)
*Lavender
*Melanistic (Davis & Mendota locales)
*Ghost (from B.H.B.)
*Blue-Eyed Blonde ?? I believe it is Lavender, not sure
*Hypo ?? Finally saw some advertised that looked like hypo (Merker stock)

If the last 2 are recessive, then they will prove out in breeding projects

Dominant genes in California Kingsnakes:

*Striping
*Aberrancies (High White, Bananas, High Yellow, Spotted, Dot-Dash, Reverse Striping, etc..)

Banded, Stripes, and Aberrancies ALL OCCUR naturally in the wild.

In the future we will have double, triple and quadruple hets.

I was going to email you personally before I even posted this thread since you are local (AZ) and I know you breed California kings. But I figured I'd give it a shot in here. Thanks a lot.

Oh, and I have yet to find anything other than banded out here while herping; :sigh: my time will come I suppose, lol.. I know they're out here, just got to find one (striped or abberant, I mean).

Thanks again,
Jennifer

But in California, the aberrants are there (Carlsbad, Newport, etc...)
