I found 2 box turtles... Need help.....

alebron Jul 27, 2004 11:12 PM

They were found in a spaghum bog in the woods by my house. I live in NJ, and i heard there population are diminishing. One was very healthy, bright in color, and perfectly bright orange eyes. It was found buried. Now the other was more dull in color, but it was abover the moss hiding in its shell. It took a while for the turtle to pop out, but when it did it wouldn't about it eyes. It seems lathergic, and the eyes are swollen. What should i do? The healthy one will be release. I just want to see the other more active.

Why not have a vet look at it, then release it where you found it? Or, get in contact with a rehabber (through your vet), and let them care for it then release it where it was found.

I guess that is good. The vet would be a problem, but my school is affiliated with rehabilitaters, and rescue programs.

So in the meantime i have a heat lamp over the tank (20 gallon tall), some dirt, a bowl it can submerge in, a hide, and soil.
In addition the turtle is becoming less lethargic and is moving aroung, eyes still swollen. I know with my red ears, if their eyes get swollen, they have drops for them. Could these drops work for box turtles too?
Also, what else would i need to accomodate this turtle.

I think what you're doing so far sounds good. I would advise against putting anything in its eyes, since a diagnosis has not been made.
Let the rehabber make that determination when he or she picks it up from you.
Also, make sure that temps don't exceed about 85.

I'd try a Pediolyte solution. Spritz the eyes and even allow it to soak in a 50/50 solution (non-chlorinated water of course). Keep moderately warm, indirect sunlight.
