Hi gals & guys. I'm new here...

First time looking in here. I've got pythons, but I'm looking to get into tortoises. I'm really looking towards the Indian Star Tortoise. I would go Sulcatta or Leopard tortoise, but I don't have that much space and also I don't want to get a hernia from moving tortoise when needed. I'm in Phoenix, so it's pretty dry and hot here compared to other states. I've looked into other species, but the Indian Star was one of those "love at first sight" things. I've read somewhat on these amazing creatures. What are some of the things you feed them? I've read or "heard" that "wet" veggies and plants are not too good for them. I've read that weeds, grass, cacti, and flowers are good for them. I don't trust the grass around here. Is there any other plants that benefit them. Would Aloe Vera be good for them? So any help or suggestions please? Also, what other tortoises would be a good "pet"?

Hello! I really wish I could be of more help, but I am also new to this forum and have only owned my first tortoise for 2 months now. I just had to comment on the "love at first sight" because when I first started looking and was IN LOVE witht the Indian Star!! They are absolutely beautiful animals I was the opposite though the only reason we didn't buy one (besides the price) was their size, we wanted something a little bigger.

We decided on a Leopard tortoise. Some people say they may not be "good first pets" We have not have any problems and next to the Indian Star-I think they are beautiful animals. I wish I could give you more advice-if you want information on leopards than let me know-I can share the little information that I know! Good luck and keep us posted on what you decided!

Thanks for the reply. Decisions decisions. I was a bank withdrawal away from getting a Leopard tortoise in the past, but I had to really think it over, since our backyard is basically a 100 square foot patio. I figured that would be awful to restrain such an animal. Maybe, when I win the lottery I'll buy some Leopards, Aldabras, Sucattas, and Galapagos to fill the 500 acre yard. We can dream. Good luck with your Leopard. They are very beautiful. Excellent choice.

they are quite beautiful among tortoises and are getting down in prices nowaday, captive ones are your best bet since the imports are full of bad press and could make you cry from your bank ...
provide them the right living condition and you will have a shinning star which not only beautiful to look at but can be very personable, too.(some will chase you and want to sit on your lap and beg for food and you think i'm kidding...)
I would think you 're in the right state for their main staple food (except the giant Saguarros!) , a 100 sqf back yard can be a very nice place to exhibit your star if you give sometime and efforts to plant them an outdoor palace(xerascapable with cactus, aloe Vera...) there are tons of information out there so do your homework and make your own
