Plants

alreynolds2003 Jul 28, 2004 06:39 AM

Got any ideas of some plants I can get that are on the bigger side, but don't weigh much. As of now I have a some pothos and another that I can't remember the name of. I would like something with a lot of coverage but I am limited to about 3 1/2 ft. for height. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Bless God,

Adam

For good cover I would use a dwarf umbrella or an umbrella plant. Use a plastic pot instead of ceramic if u are worried about weight.

Yes, I agree. This is the main plant for Luna. It offers great cover, lots of upright branches for her to rest and sleep on. It is a schefflera. The only thing you have to be careful of is overwateriing. Do not let your dripper go directly into the pot and if you fog or use a humidifier be aware of amount of water it gets. They will start dropping leaves like crazy and the stems will bend and wilt. It is best to let the top inch or so of the soil to dry out between waterings, which can be difficult in a herp enclosure. Every couple weeks I take it outside for a few days to let it dry out (NOT in direct sunlight). In the winter I use the ficus (b/c I can't take the scheff out to dry in the snow! LOL) and keepn the scheff under lights.

hope this helps!

Thank you everyone for the wonderful input! I had a schefflera and wondered why it was dying. It was definately overwatered and never had a chance to dry out. I learned my lesson!

I assume from your picture that you are keeping jackson's. There is a plant known as "China doll" (Radermachera) that is sold in more northern climates as a house plant it comes from China and likes temps and moisture similar to what Jacksons like.(not too hot not too cold a little on the humid side.) It grows into a tree but is a really slow grower (much slower than Schefflera or Ficus which both take off like rockets if conditions are right.) Coffee plants work well too but it takes some time to get them to a suitable size of course once they are there they don't grow all that fast either. Another good one is the "Coral berry" plant (Ardisia crenata) which looks similar to a coffee plant and only gets to about 3ft. or so.
