New idea.. More on Horse Feeds..

Lucien Jul 28, 2004 09:39 AM

The new thing in Horse Feeds is Extruded Nugget type feeds. Now I figure these are going to be somewhat like blocks or at least similar to dog food... and could easily be mixed with dog food to complete a whole diet for Rats and mice(Possibly mice anyway since I don't raise them) I'm going to be buying a bag to try out with my rats... Blue Seals seems to be going with a whole line of this stuff... I considered the Vintage Mare and Foal but it had added Molasses to up the protein levels..and I know alot of people say sweets and rats don't go well together. Anyway, here's the Vintage Gold I found that I'll be trying. If anyone would like to hear about the results after a couple months feel free to ask.

Vintage Gold is a high protein, high fat extruded nugget designed to meet the nutritional requirements of performance, condition and growth. Features stabilized rice bran. Contains exclusively plant-based fat sources. This feed also features added lysine to aid in performance, growth and lactation.
Crude Protein - 16.0
Crude Fat - 7.5
Crude Fiber - 7.0

Please post how this goes. I have a Blue Seal dealer I love but have yet to find an 'alternate' food for the rats especially. The mice will eat a seed mix and junk dog kibble. Rats get picky and want new kibble etc. Last horse food I tried didn't go over at all, they wouldn't eat it and it fermented as bedding.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

Not a problem.. I'll do that... My Rats live on a wild bird seed/Squirrel mix (Squirrel mix has peanuts and corn in it) and dog kibble.. usually the cheap stuff.. (IE Ol' Roy from Wal-Mart or Dad's) The last horse feed I bought in the pelleted stuff didn't go over well either. I'm sure if I bought sweet feed of any kind that would go over well but only because of the sugar. I'm looking for something a bit healthier and keep looking through horse feeds since they seem cheap and easily available. And this Extruded feed is in Nugget form so it seems like it would be of more interest to the rats than pellets would be...I'll be picking up a bag of it probably after the 1st..and seeing how it goes over... Will keep ya updated.
