Help with sick CA Wood..... infection maybe???

TracyRen Jul 28, 2004 09:47 AM

Long story short I've had her for four years and she has had ongoing health problems from a bad case of hexamita when I got her. Now she is barely moving around and her front half, arms, shoulders and neck look extremely swollen. She can't pull her legs into her shell and one leg looks as if it may split from the swelling.

No one here will be able to diagnose your animal or tell you what to do about the infection. The animal needs qualified veterinary assistance. Do it now.

Just thought someone might have an idea, been through four "reptile and exotic specialists" in my area with her in the past and they told me things like "well she's trying to hibernate" (hello Central American), "she must be egg bound" (I have no male) and "sorry I usually see iguanas I really don't know much about turtles".

I ended up doing research on the internet, telling my mammal vet exactly what tests to do and what medication to give.

So I thought I'd save the headache, worry and expense.

I have a pair of CA Woods(the Ornate kind)-i have the biggest soft spot for Woodies...anyways...

I seriously doubt she's egg bound..doesnt matter if there is a male or not, they will lay eggs like chickens.
And yeah they DO NOT hibernate...

Are you in SoCal because I'd tell you to go to Dr.Greek, he's a really good reptile vet. I really hope yer here in SoCal...
Her leg split? And she's all swollen??
Jeezus...she's obviously got some infection going, why the hell didn't they at LEAST attempt treatment, antibiotics might help!?

I see you're in Omaha. I take my Ornate Wood Turtle to Dr. Jennifer Wagner at VCA-Rhorig Animal Hospital on Dodge St. She's awesome. Here's the info:

Rohrig Animal Hospital
8022 West Dodge Rd.
Omaha, NE 68114 - 3414
(402) 399-8100

Hopefully you can get your little guy in to see her before it's too late. Good Luck!!

Alison
