question about feeding...

aligoonbaba Jul 28, 2004 01:59 PM

My columbian is a little over 2 feet now. He eats once a week, two adult mice. Sometimes I think he isn't eating enough. What do you guys think? Should he be eating more? Thanks for your help.

nothing wrong with mice either, except he will grow out of mice eventually. I don't really understand the "no-mice" movement. Even though an adult mouse is a little harder to digest, it contains more lean protein and less fat than a rat pup. Also has the benifit of more calcium since the bones are fully developed. While a rat pup has more fat, it has a skelaton of cartilage, and a diet(milk) that doesn't give the benifit of a gut load. Also, I see plenty of boas that have necks larger than their head! Not a healthy specimen. Let you snake mature naturally and don't over-feed, it can cause fatty liver deposits and premature death.
Good Luck-

The safest bet is too look at your boas largest part of his/hers body,an choose a rat pup or weaned rat that is just a little not alot larger than the largest part of your boa's body an you will have no probs at all!Hope this helps,an simply put as your boa grows then increase the rat size the same way! Thanks [HYPOBOA]
