how to tell when shes scared

crtoon83 Jul 28, 2004 03:24 PM

I was just wondering how can i tell when my snake gets scared ve just crawling around on me, or does she do that because she is scared? i take her out 2-3 times a day and she seems to know who i am because she always comes to me vs a friend or something, and about 95% of the time i'm by myself. if im standing up she crawls all over me, if im sitting she tries to crawl off somewhere? is this normal or signaling fear?

My snakes tend to hang on to me if I'm standing. I don't know that they have really great visual perspective of how far away the floor is. I'm a stable, vertical perch, and they stick with me. A drop from a height of 4-5 feet can really damage a snake (they're all ribs and spine) so they're most likely sticking with what ever they've got a good grip on. When you're sitting, they are closer to the next surface, so it may seem safer to them to try to leave you as a perch. If you're near the floor or there's a perch on near the same height, they almost always try to make a break for it. I don't think it's necessarily fear of you related. Fear of you would be more of the striking, musking, tail rattling and trying to hide in the nearest dark corner to get away from you. Something I've noticed is once you put a snake on the floor- all bets are off. Some of calmest snakes in your hands can turn into pretty defensive critters once they think they're free.

I've thought about that, however I've also noticed the first week or two once I had her she would always run back to her hiding cave as soon as she got back in her tank, however now she will still hang out on the driftwood i have in there or whatnot. so i've thought of those things as well i just wasnt too sure.

thanks.
