Update on "Wow! An unexpected birth!"

caecilianman02 Jul 28, 2004 05:22 PM

Hi there:

Today I couldn't find the adult chameleons at all! I searched all around the tropical vivarium, an ended up only finding the enormous female. I don't know what happened. She's blown up like a balloon all of a sudden. I looked and looked for the young adult male and I still can't find him at all. I went away for awhile and came back later to find yet a third tiny perfect chameleon staring up at the mesh screen.
I took it out and put it in with the other two. Still no sign of the male, but I'll keep looking. As far as the babies go, I have one male and two females. All three are worth about $95, but I am NOT going to sell them. I plan to buy one or two more from a different gene pool to breed them even further.

May I ask how you can sex the babies this soon after emerging from the egg?

I didn't think R. Brev's were sexable until a bit older.

Hi there;

Oops! I made a typo. Thanks for pointing that out. What I meant was I'm guessing that I have a male and two females. All of the females that I've kept are big, fat and have hunched backs. All of the males that I have kept are long and skinny with flimsy legs. I know that this may not be true of all individuals, but even though these were hatched in the same nest at the same time, 2 are very fat, large and have high hunched backs, while one is long and skinny with different patterning than the other two. Not that the patterning means anything; just an interesting observation.

You can sex R. Brevs at hatching or soon after by their coloration.... The males will have a lighter brown general color, with more contrasting stripes on their side. The males also will have more than one stripe, where the females pretty much have just one. The females are kinda a medium brown, with a wide darker brown stripe down the side.... You may need to look at them at a few different times, with them in a few different moods, but I think it's pretty easy to tell the differences. I'm looking at some 2 week olds right now and I got 1 male and 3 females right here LOL.... Let us know what you think.

I know what you mean about the different body shapes. Tyler makes sense about the different patterns...but like he said, you probably have to watch them for a bit to be sure. See if the body shape you describe goes along with the coloration differences that Tyler mentioned. Interesting...

Hi there:

Yep, the patterning goes along with the shapes all right. I am slightly concerned because I cannot find the adult male still. I gently searched all about the cage and there is still no sign of him anywhere. All of the babies are asleep ligned up on a twig. They're really cute and I am going to try to post some pictures later.
