Feeding sick rats to healthy snakes

uglykid2 Jul 28, 2004 05:48 PM

Hi everybody I have a question for rat breeders. I have a colony of about 40 rats and two of them are very noisy breathers. It sounds wet, like they're slurping back and forth through a straw. Should I destroy them, separate them from the rest or feed them to my snakes? I hate to waste them but don't want to risk my snakes' health and I don't want whatever their problem is infecting the whole colony if it's infectious. What's a breeder to do? Let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks! John

Unless you plan on investing in meds it will get worse before it gets better. I personally would kill them and freeze them first. I am paranoid about disease with my herps. It is likely not contagious to the herps. But likely your other rats could get it, so I would get them out of there.
