hermans tortoise URI??

barace21 Jul 28, 2004 08:54 PM

Hi, I have a question about my baby hermans tortoise. He is kept at 85 deg daytime temp (access to hotter) and 80 degree night time temp (access to hotter). He is eating fine. He has a "bubbling nose" that bubbles when he breathes. It seems that he has a cold, but I think his conditions are right. The only thing that I can think of is that he only gets two full days of sunlight a week (weekends) but he has a uv heat light on every day in his cage(maybe not enough sun). I would like some advice. If this can't be cured by myself, I can take him to the vet. Usually this happens if they are kept too cold, but I don't think this is the case. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Brandon

I would take him to the vet if I were you. The runny nose can escalate quickly, and with a baby you don't want to take chances. Try increasing the heat a few degrees and see if that helps, but your temps are basically fine. I don't use heat on my Hermann's or maginated at night (goes down into 60s), and I've never had a problem with RI. In native habitat they experience a night drop in temps, so I doubt your temps are the issue, but now that the little guy has the runny nose, you want to keep the temps up a bit to help him fight it off.

Your best bet is to take him to the vet, as he will most likely need a course of antibiotics. Is his eating/activity level OK?

He eats fine it seems. I feed him every morning and he always eats. I am not home during the day, but at night/evening, he is never out.

If he is eating, that's good. He wouldn't be up at night--mine are usually bedded down for the night by 6:30, sometimes earlier. If the runny nose continues, even with a little extra warmth, a vet visit is warranted.
