Tortoise Escaped

davezilla15 Jul 28, 2004 09:49 PM

Hi everyone my russian tortoise escaped from his outdoor enclosure tonight. Ive been looking for a couple of hours for him but I cant find him and its been dark. I dont know what to do I am going to look for him early tommorrow morning when the sun comes up but does anyone know any techniques of finding or catching escaped tortoises. I am scared for him because of the weather and for lawn mowers and wild animals. If anyone has any ideas please tell me

Thanks,

Davezilla

What ya gotta do is think like a tortoise and more to the point, a Russian tortoise. (not kidding here)

Russians are fantastic climbers and diggers if you have not realized that by now.

Tortoises do not normally like to stay out in the open so check along the base of the fenceline. I know it's late but the evening is the best time to look because once the sun comes up it is on the move again.

Follow the fince line and follow a line out any opening you find.

If you're talking open space, start at the enclosure and travel in a spiral out from the enclosure. Check the base of rocks, bunches of grass and at the base of bushes.

These guys can really travel.

It never hurts to post fliers around your house.

A few weeks ago my male hermanns busted out of the tortoise corral in the front yard & spent the night on his own. I found him the next morning less than 10' from where he got out.

Good luck & keep us updated.

...and SLEEPWALKERS...they also will ended up at your neighbor's yard after hibernations if you're not careful.
