A question about treating Coccidia

JAG Jun 22, 2003 09:02 PM

I obtained Albon from my local vet last week and then went on the internet and saw that they sell somethin similar. My question is if what i saw and what i got might be different. I am not quite sure. I want to treat all three of my babies as they have shared a cage with the sick one. Description is as follows:

Albon Rx, Oral Suspension .5%, 60 ml Albon Oral Suspension 5%: Each teaspoon (5 mL) contains 250 mg sulfadimethoxine. Indications: For the treatment of sulfadimethoxine-sensitive bacterial infections in dogs and cats and bacterial enteritis associated with coccidiosis in dogs. ALBON is indicated for the treatment of respiratory, genitourinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections in dogs and cats: tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, cystitis, nephritis, metritis, pyometra, pustular dermatitis, anal gland infections, abscesses, wound infections, bacterial enteritis, canine salmonellosis, bacterial enteritis associated with coccidiosis in dogs, when caused by streptococci, staphylococci, escherichia, salmonella, klebsiella, proteus or shigella organisms sensitive to sulfadimethoxine.
Caution: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Is this the same stuff or no? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry about bugging about this prtozoa, but I'm tryin to fix my leo's.

Just get a prescription from your vet to treat the other leos you have. What you describe is the same drug but who knows if it is the same concentration and besides you need a prescription anyway. Good luck.

Would I have to get a fecal done with my other two also, or can I just ask for the medication?

Just ask for the medication. In fact when I have done fecals on animals housed together vet told me I don't need to track which geckos laid which poo as if one has something the protocol is to treat them all.

Exactly, thats what I told my vet, but he said not to worry about it. I had Ziggy in with my male since they were both bought around the same time and they were the same size. After a month or so I noticed my male (Winky) was huge but ziggy was not so I separated them as well as I separated her from albino (Ally). He told me just put them in separte cages and that would be enough, but I would still fill a whole lot better if I could deworm them all. Before its to late.

Hmmm. Well first of all coccidia is not a worm, it is a protozoan, it is much more difficult to treat than worms- and extremely contagious. Worms can be "cured" - eliminated from your gecko- fairly easily. As I understand it, coccidia can be treated and the gecko can live a healthy life with proper care, but the parasite is very difficult if not impossible to eliminate and the gecko will always need to be quarantined. The gecko will require exceptional hygeine and sanitation, sterilization of cage and all things in cage at least once and preferably twice daily (get two plastic shoeboxes and switch between) and may require future treatments.
