Genetic Question

robert baker Jul 29, 2004 09:08 AM

Hello. I appreciate your help in advance. I am going to be posting some babies here shortly and I need help on the description. I don’t want to post incorrectly so I need your expert help. I bred a nice hypo to a DH for Snow male. So I’ve got some hypo babies and some normals of course. Here is what I think it is ….please correct me if I am wrong.

Hypos – 50% het for snow
Normals – 50% het for snow

Thanks,
Robert

I am by no means a genetic expert, and throwing in a co-dom really throws me of.... but... I dont think it would be 50%

Normally when you breed a het for snow with an animal that has neither the Anery or Albino Gene in it... the genes will divide themselves. So I think what you would end up with would be

half Hypo and half normal, but of those....

25% would be het for Anery
25% would be het for Albino
25% would be het for Snow (both)
and 25% wouldnt carry either of the "snow" genes

That could be wayyyy off tho.

You will see many people misrepresenting their animals as 50% possible het snows. The above answers are 100% correct, and if you label them that way you will be ahead of some of the big breeders. How many times have we all seen either 50% or 66% poss het snows, the only way normals could be that is if they were 100% het for one or the other. Your stock just went up in my book for asking then truthfully marketing these animals. Have a great day and good luck. Craig Kade
