question about UTH's

hap101 Jun 22, 2003 09:10 PM

I have a 70 gallon tank with a UTH on each end. I have a hide at each end. Trying to make one cool and the other hot with no success. Temps are the same on both ends no matter what I do. I think the heat is spreading through the glass form one end to the other. Should I put the uth directly under the substrate? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

...I assume this is for an adult BP? A smaller animal may feel insecure in such a large cage. At any rate, to maximize a temp gradient use the UTH at only one end, maybe put a dome light on top with a 60 watt bulb, and then if you have a screen cover, seal the remainder of the screen with plastic or 2 inch packing tape to help with maintaining humidity, and also heat. With this big a cage use a hide at each end. Temp gradient of about 80-90F is good. Turn the dome light off at night but leave the UTH on 24 hours. This should work better for you. Note that many UTH are frquently well over 90F and you may need a rheostat to control the temp. SJM
