I got a human heat pad, and laid it on the glass on one end of my tank, then covered it with 1" of sand...at the lowest setting, it only gets about 85 degrees. The sting on the surface must be coming from bulbs that are either A) too hott, or B) too close. Either has a simple remedy...lower the wattage, or increase the distance between the light and the sand.

Sounds big...can you tear it in half? Just kidding. I would try something like placing a nonflammable material between it and the sand...perhaps some slate.
