Star Tortoise bedding

J-Cal Jul 29, 2004 12:57 PM

What is the best to use? I hear people say "natural" but what does that mean exactly. I've always used rabbit pellets for torts without a problem....i really fear impaction problems. Whats the best for stars?

Read a bit about their natural history!
A starting point:
www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/elegans.html
www.tortoisetrust.org/care/celegans.html

www.chelonia.org/PDF_care_sheets.htm
page down to "Geochelone elegans - Star Tortoise - Chris Tabaka DVM and Darrell Senneke"

Besides impaction, I'd worry too about the lack of firm footing on rabbit pellets.

I use organic top soil mixed with play sand. Then I have hay on top of that.

it's that Substrate topic again...there are people who swear that Eucalyptus mulch is the best thing for them...they smelled good (reminded me of some vacation resorts)...but some disagreed for their saps which can be dangerous...

I've heard nothing but goodness about E.Mulch, BUT where does one get it. I've never seen it available at West or East Coast garden centers.

emulchinformercial nokidding! if that failed, perhaps it's about time you make that trip to your local Wal-Mart® ...(okay...just for your tort's sake...but not all of them carry emulch, so call first)
