I feel left out. ((((PICS)))) Outer Banks King questions

bluerosy Jul 29, 2004 01:27 PM

Everyone here rememeber this breeding I did?
Eastern X Hypo Brooksi

To get this het hypo:

well I did it again to get this f1 het. See and notice the red:

F1

Well...I bred het to het like the three pics above to get this all black and white looking thing:

Now ask yourself..why would two red (F1)hets give birth to F2 babies that look like OBK's????
another F-2

F2
Does this look like an OBK to anyone?

Oh ya I got some real cool looking hypos from this as well. Keeping all of them though!

I am not posting this to stir contention but rather as a learning tool as to how eastern getula evolved and how to discern a fake OBK.

The OBX King (L. g. sticticeps) is supposed to be a relic intergrade between the Florida King and the Eastern King. This, I guess, before the Outer Banks split from the continent.

That being said - it would make sense that the more you bred those snakes together, hypothetically, the closer to the real sticticeps you could get.

Just take a look at the Dumerils Boas from Madagascar and compare them to Boa Constrictors and you could see how this happens.

Very cool!

P.S. I freely admit that I am a National Zoo curator wannabe!!!

You could market these as "Ersatz Outer Banks Kings". I would buy them!!!

I assume you have German lineage - you should know what "Ersatz" means!!!!

That initial hypo cross is a very attractive snake!

As a side note in SE VA we regularly found easterns that looked to be OBX kings. Also I've found kings on Hatteras Island (south of Frisco) that looked like easterns!

Its not so odd when you think about it. Floridana are usually black and white or yellow as babies. Mix in a Already Black and white snake then breed those babies together and yes that seems to be the natural progression. Seeing those babies though makes my skin crawl thinking they might get into irresponsible hands. They are pretty cool looking though I have to admit.

Here is a pic of one of the little guys. I am not personally into man made crosses, but these guys are really cool looking snakes! I actually bought it second or third hand as a Georgia Eastern King and Keith was able to find out it was one of Rainers crosses. He has lightend up quit a bit since I have had him. He will not be bred, but he makes a nice pet.

This is one of the best looking Kings I've seen you produce yet. You keeping that one? I'd like to see how it turns out as an adult.
