Breeding beardies have a few questions

hawiiangecko Jul 29, 2004 01:44 PM

I would like to know the difficulty for breeding beardies and the approximate age for when they are mature to breed. I think i have a female she is about 10 months old and she has femoral pores and 1 lump but it almost looks like she has the two lumps on each side. I would like a breeder to reply with a few pictures and that is about it.

Thank You,
Seth

Breeding dragons is easy, but once you have babies it can be lots of work. 10 months is too young, I think most everyone on this board agrees that 18 months is the minimum and we would also need to know her size and weight.

Are you sure your dragon is female?

Do you have a separate tank for the potential mate? Male and female should not be housed together on a permanent basis. This question is often just about every day it seems, so a lot of information is already listed on the board, do some searches and if there's something you don't see addressed, post again.

10 tubs should be fine, so long as they are large enough to house 6-8 babies each. Can't help with how to post pictures on this board. Did you have other questions?

No offense, but what is your reasoning for breeding? Wouldn't it be more pleasant just to keep a couple as pets? Having that many baby beardies is going to take up a good amount of your time, time that you could be spending enjoying your other reptilian pets.

I think it's great that everyone wants to breed....it's good for the species...well, besides the numbskulls that inbreed them. I just wonder why everyone with a dragon thinks they should start breeding. With so many people breeding them now, the industry is full of bearded dragons, which isn't a bad thing, but it makes the price of them go way down and that makes people think they are just a cheap disposable pet. Jeez, now I'm starting to sound like the guy from a couple of days ago. I've just been concerned lately about the future of the reptile hobby. Every anti-reptile advocate is already at our throats, and the fact that any idiot can go in and get a large snake or lizard (beardies aren't that big, but they are too much care for most people that aren't truely devoted to reptiles), and that's where problems are steming from.

But if you do decide to breed, you have to try to ensure that your beardies go to great homes (I know there are some people on here that only let them go to homes that really know how to take care of them), and please make sure that no inbreeding occurs. Seperate all sexually mature dragons that aren't specifically intended to breed!

Phemoral pores are not an accurate way to sex dragons. I'll include a link bellow so you can see a pic. for sexing.

The most acceptable age would be 18 months. I prefer 2yrs. There are many other factors to go by in addition, weight, overall size, health, etc. If you have a 2yr old who is skinny or under 400g. then it wouldn't be advisable to breed her.
This is a very controversial subject. Breeding young dragons is comparable to a 13yr old girl having a baby. Yes it can & does happen, but is it safe or a good idea?

You definitely want to make sure you have unrelated dragons to breed. There is a post not to far down asking why their babies tails are messed up, yet they openly admit they parents are related. It doesn't take a Dr. degree to use common sense.

There is another post not far down talking about the costs involved with raising babies. It's not cheep! If you are looking to make some money, forget about it. I guarantee that you will loose money for the first year or two. The only way you will make any decent money is if you are VERY lucky & something spectacular pops out (not likely to happen).
When you have a clutch or two of babies you can't even go away for the weekend, unless you have someone you can trust to come over & take care of them (several times a day). It is a lot of work, time, & money to get a clutch to 6weeks so you can sell them.
Now, if you do get them to 6 weeks, there is a lot of competition out there. Go look at the classifieds & see how fast an add gets buried. Check in the morning & then go back that night & see how many are posted after the first one you looked at. That's a lot of competition! Like I mentioned above, unless you have some top notch animals, you may wind up finding it hard to give them away. (no joke)

Sooo,, go through this board & read all the posts you can. Go to as many sites as you can & read as many care sheets as you can. Definitely do your homework before you jump in.

Good luck.
