Painted Turtles and Company

Ok so here is a lame question, but one I would like to ask.

How many of you have your painted turtles with other species of turtles? And namely, what type do you have together?

I have had red eared sliders with them before...many many years ago, but he is long since passed on. Now, I would love to get a friend or two into this 55 gallon with them, but I'd like something a bit different... Though I'm not certain as to what exactly, though I have a Diamond back, and Mud turtle in mind.... The "mud" is at a local, very cruddy pet store, and I really wanna get him or her, out of there. She's near full grown, and in with alot of other turtles so I was hoping on a good tempermant....Also, she is a VERY light color, almost tan, though not sickly looking at all... So I was hoping the maybe nab her up.

Is this a bad idea? I don't really want anything happening to my turtles yanno?

Sounds to me like you already have more than one turtle in the 55 gal tank. If so, there is no room for anymore. A good rule is 10 gals per inch of turtle, so if you have a 5 inch turtle a 55 is good. If you have two 5 inch turtles then a 100 gal is good. If you want to rescue this mud turtle I would get it another tank. Also you should always quarantine the new turtle before putting it in with other turtles so it won't get the other sick if it is sick.

My painted lives with a map and a RES. They're all still pretty small though. At the moment, they also share their pond with a rescued baby snapper. He is smaller than they are and will be released next summer though.

First off turtles are not social creatures. They do not need "friends". Secondly your tank is only big enough for ONE adult painted. So adding a second turtle that grows even larger such as a slider, will mean you will have to get a tank 90gal on up.

Fact one I am well aware of.

As for to small, mine aren't old at all...up sizing per age is allways an option. I do in fact work in a pet store, so it's not something below a level of common sense, hence why I ask WHAT type of turtles will not have a problem living in the same set up. I don't ask for them to have friends...simply something that will NOT cause them to kill eachother.
