Help..my beardie has trouble shedding

madlady Jun 22, 2003 09:29 PM

My sons' beardie Rex has the worst time shedding ..we mist him daily but he seems to shed in stages sometime's a week or so apart..first his head than his bodie and than legs and lastly his tail. he gets really cranky during the whole process..i was wondering if daily baths would help him along with the process..any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

warm soaks when shedding are always welcome, it really helps them out, you can rub them gently while in the bath, just be careful never to pull any shed off your dragon, gently rubbing them to loosen usually feels pretty good. My dragons push on my hands when doing this when they are in shed. If you are having trouble areas like toes or tail or just a peice that seems to be staying, some veggie oil can help them out, just rubbing it on the area can help loosen the shed. Hope that this helps some, shedding is always a miserable time. Adults especially can take some time to shed, and usually will shed in stages and not all at once like babies, just keep up with the baths and it should help him along.

Warm soaks help loosen the dead skin. Also most bearded dragons shed in patches instead of their entire body at once like snakes and other reptiles do. My dragon sheds his head, legs, and half his tail (the end half) first, then a week or so after that, sheds his body, beard and rest of his tail. The second stage comes off alot easier than the first. Sounds like your breadie has a similiar shedding pattern. As for crankiness...not much you can do with that other than trying to provide relief with regular soaks and veggie oil for the hard spots. Putting a few rocks into the cave helps as it does provide a nice rough surface to rub against.
