re: swimming tortoises

i let junior swim again today, so i took a picture. i think he does pretty good considering his lack of any real toes! doesn't anyone else have one that can swim? at turtles times i once saw a series of photos showing a yellowfoot that swam in its owner's pool!

ha ha! Great pic.

I let my Russian swim a couple times a few years ago but I think he was more scared than pleased with the experience. He doesn't like water in general and barely tolerates soakings, and he seemed VERY relieved when he reached the shallow end of the tub and was able to touch bottom. Still, he was a surprisingly good swimmer and very buoyant!

I would be very careful here. I've had young ones aspirate water and die while just soaking in a shallow bowl. I know I've seen redfoots swimming in the wild on nature shows, but I just wouldn't take the chance.

don't worry, i am *very* careful with him... i only let him swim for a minute or so, and i'm always at the ready to grab him. i definitely wouldn't let him swim unattended... that's a good rule of thumb even for humans!

One of my redfoots loves to swim, I have a large pond that they have access to that has very shallow edges. She takes an almost daily swim across and out the other side. My other ones only go to the edge and stay in the very shallow water. I used to keep them fenced off from the pond but I don't think there is anything to fear as long as they can easily get out when they want.
