Wanting to start a breeding project...

justanuthertina Jul 29, 2004 07:34 PM

I've had snakes for the last couple of years, as pets. I've got an Albino banded King, and a black and white striped King as of right now, both unsexed. I also have a Ball Python, but I'm not so much interested in breeding her... although it might be considered a more profitable investment... i just dont like them as much as colubrids... I am looking to start with something easy, and I'm willing to expand my collection by a couple of snakes... What are good snakes to start with? what will be easy to sell once I have them, what is most desirable. I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area... Are their any notable breeders in the area that are reputable and could help me out?

If you know of any books or anything that would help, that would be good too, I am going into my first year of college this fall, so i'll have a good year to do my research and find the right snakes before i'm really ready to venture into it. Any information would be greatly appreciated...

Im starting a breeding project too. Im starting off with cali kings. The only difficult part would be the breeding as you have to be sure that they dont eat each other. You should be able to sex them by the tail. If you can see "hips" were the vent is, you have a female. You should notice a difference if you have a male and a female. The female you should notice a sudden sharp width reduction at the vent. If you can tell where the vent is from the top of the animal, its probable female. I had mine sexed for me though, they should be ready to breed two years from now, I can hardly wait!
