New to water dragons... cage size questions

chimbakka Jul 29, 2004 09:15 PM

I haven't gotten a water dragon yet, but I have been thinking about it. I currently have a leopard gecko, a panther chameleon, and i am "babysitting" a pictus gecko for a friend, so I am not new to keeping lizards. I am very aware of the needs of water dragons, but I am not quite sure what would be the best size cage for one.
I am rebuilding my chameleons cage, and I would like to use the wood from her old one to build a new cage for a WD. The cage is 5.5' tall, 3'wide, and 2'deep. I am not sure if i should keep the 5.5' height, or put it horizontally, so that it is 3' tall. would this be enough? I am only wanting to get one dragon, and these new forums are difficult to search.
Also, how many sides should be solid? the cage right now has the whole back solid, with the sides, front and top 1/4" mesh.
And if any one has suggestions for cage building, let me know! I know there are a lot of things you learn AFTER a cage is finished, and I want to get this one right the first time!!!
Thanks!!
~Lindsay

Water dragons need height, so it is best to keep the 5.5 foot height. That cage is a little small, but as long as you only have one you may be ok. Three sides should be solid, with just the front see through. Mesh isn't a good idea, the front should be glass or plexi, to keep the heat and humidity in.
