Varanus beccari...

The Odatriad
Here's a pic of my female, right after I discovered that I had left he door of their enclosure open(ignorance), and she got out.. Luckily, in my experiences in dealing with escapees, they usually do not stray too far... maybe only a couple of feet or so... She was within two steps of her enclosure, in a likely spot. This is the first time I've held her in a while, she did feel a bit distended in the abdomen...perhaps she could be cycling/gravid again? who knows, I haven't seen any cop's, but I have seen the two acting in the same manner towards eachother as they did prior to last time... too bad lizard keeping wasn't my fulltime job...I'd sure learn alot about them, which they normally do 'behind my back'..
cheers,
bob

hahaha... he sure looks it.. he's quite a porker to begin with, plus he just ate quite his share of hoppers today... I think I'm going to put him on the atkins diet for a while, see what happens.... take care..
bob

here's a pic of some of my Black Tree Monitors making out...hahaha... nah, they're "sharing" a mouse... such gluttons...
but oh how I love them... cheers friends,
bob

..
gorgeous bob, thank you.
andrew
ps: i will call tomorrow night if you are around.
gave the kimberlys new loam today that was less clay filled and then i double sifted it. its real fine now, i am going to mix in a little sand again though.
just made an offer on a new place with a 25 x 25 area for the herps (with 220) (plus a bonus for ?) not having kids is nice for now. so cross some fingers. i am giving myself til april though to find a new place. either way, now or april
cheers
Cool andrew, I look forward to your call, i'll be around tomorrow night... shoot the $hit for a while....I'll be up til about 1am my time (EST)
25 x 25 eh??? Man, I'd kill for that space right now... I've got everything of mine in a 10 x 9' room(something like that)... I should go on one of those home decorating shows, because of my "space-conservation" abilities...hahah..
I'll talk to you tomorrow. Take care buddy,
bob
25 x 25 isn't bad, plus its got the 220 - Always a plus when living in northern regions. Now let's hope they give you the loan. Good luck!
no, the loan is not the problem, i am pre-approved. i live in hick region, a lot of people have their outbuildings or garages setup for 220. the problem is that it is a sellers market and everybody is buying. andrew
i have had more than that amount of space before with a double insulated garage plus a 15x10 room. i kept monitors in the garage and snakes in the house plus an old hot tub outside for a big alligator snapper. but i have never ever turned the heat on, the lights do that. the problem is in cooling the areas because of all the heat that the lights in the cages emit. right now i have the windows open plus fans to move the heat out, i have only had to close the windows twice in the past couple months.
it will just be nice to have a larger area again, it is much easier to work with. having space again will only be a problem with avoiding filling it up. by april if anything.
andrew
Yeah I agree a larger area always works better. The larger the are, the more organized you can get with these guys.
I have a problem with heat too. In the middle of the day, where I keep some of my monitors, ambient temps run up to 110-120. I have one fan that circulates the air, but it just circulates hot air and dries everything out, since my cages are open. I found that with 2 feet of dirt inside for all of them, they can go to the bottom and the temp is in the high 60's at noon
Apology accepted. Now get some pics of your guys attacking you or some $hit lol.
I, for one, never tire of looking at the pictures of the various tree monitors and how they're supposed to be set up and properly kept. As I've contacted by email 2 on this forum about them and future plans I have for a "Forest room" setup...which I already know I won't see the monitors much on that.. but thats the point of dedicating a room to them entirely... once they're acclimated of course and eating/drinking steadily. I am hoping however that this step may be partially un-necessary if CB babies can be successfully produced in the next 2 years or so. Acclimation may become somewhat easier...V. Macraei is my dream to own and one day I will when I feel I'm capable of caring and providing for its needs and giving it the opportunity to do what it does best.. be a monitor. Socialize, reproduce..maintain territory...and as many other things as I can manage to allow them while keeping them within a boxed area so to speak...albeit a box larger than they'd have seen otherwise. My monitor experience is very limited..however I'm willing to learn and be called ignorant in the face of my lack of knowledge...When it comes to monitors and their reasoning...or just about any animal and its reasoning we truly are ignorant besides the gut reaction of.."It does it on instinct" Instincts count for alot but not everything.
