Anerexic Gecko

poetichusky Jul 29, 2004 11:54 PM

Hey All,
I work in a Pet Store and could use some help. I'm pretty in tune with reptiles' needs but this one stumps me. We have a baby Albino Leo who has dropped her tail. She is set up nicely in an isolation tank. The problem is, is that she won't eat. I'm guessing she's about 3-4 months old. I've tried hand feeding her crix and small mealies, but she shows no interest. We've taken her to the vet, and the vet said that she's perfectly fine. Today I gave her a few drops of this stuff made by Zoo Med, called Electrolize with a tiny syringe. It has vitamins and electorlytes and is supposed to stimulate appetite. I contemplated doing this, because I was scared to stress her out really bad, but I really want her to get better. She was doing perfectly fine about a week ago then, bam became anorexic. I changed her bulb today too, figuring the brighter light could be causing her stress, as she is albino and I put a night bulb for her. Still, no luck. She mopes around and has her eyes closed all the time, till I pick her up. I did see her drinking though. Any ideas what to do with this gecko? Should I force feed her crix? This would probably stress her way out and would be a last resort, but I've tried alot. Anything I could be missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated by me and the poor lil gecko.
Thanks,
Cathy

Try putting her somewhere that has minimal activities, or you can cover her tank with towel or whatever, so that she can't see or hear any sort of activities outside. Keep her tank a bit warmer (approx. 88-90 degrees). Just leave several mealworms in a shallow dish with her overnight, hopefully, she'll start eating again in the next few days.

Maybe you can try 'Reptoboost', its a probiotic and nutrition powder. I had one gecko that is not eating too and my vet told me to give her a warm bath mixed with a bit of reptoboost, half an hour a night, I did that for a week, and now my leo is eating 3 supers everynight

She should be on paper towel too, since she has lost her tail and that she is a baby.

Have you tried dead crix? I had the same problem with mine...she didn't eat for 2 weeks and now all she'll is eat is dead crixs.

I am hoping you mean the Can o' Crickets... and not just the dead ones from the cricket tank...!!!!

Do a search in this forum for information on feeding leos the Can o Crickets. You'll find a LOT of negative stuff on leos who are given this as a staple diet. Calcium-deficiency problems and such.

Yes, I'm talking about Can o Crickets. But its not like it matters because she wont eat it now...I'm really concerned.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the dead crix and covering her cage to see if that helps. She is already on paper towels. I'll also see if I can find some Reptoboost. I just might have to resort to bringing her home and trying to nurse her to health, although I don't want to cause her more stress by moving her. There is a lot less activity and noise here. Anyone think I should switch her over to a heat pad, rather than a light above? My Leos at home seem to like the heat pad VS a heat lamp, just a thought.
Thanks again,
Cathy
