Eastern box question?

Pimpnit869 Jul 30, 2004 03:45 AM

Hello forum members we have three boxies 2 will be a year next month and one in two months. When we recieved them from our breeder she told us not to allow them to hibernate for the first year. so that would have been last winter. We live in Ca and were wondering if we should allow them to hibernate this season? they live in an inside enclosure that has UVB lighting and CHE and UTH for heat. Please help with any info you all may have we will be very appreciative.
Thanks Jay A Tara V

I personally didn't hibernate my captive bred box turtles until they were three years olds and then I hibernated them in a controled enviroment. My husband made a hibernation box which we keep in a barely heated workwork. The box has a thermostat and lights that come on whenever the workshop temps goes below 40. I try to maintain the temp at 45. Since you live in CA you may be able to get away with hibernating them younger and outside. You should do a web search on box turtle hibernation. There are several websites with that type of info. I would not try to hibernate them indoors, not unles you have a room in the house that consistantly stays around 50-55 degrees! Anything higher and you will just be slowly starving your small turtles. Sure, people do it and the turtles usually live, but the turtles are not in the best health and could succumb to illness later. Good luck with your turtles.
