hi
I couldn't say I'm a snake enthusiast, but I'm definitely a nature lover. I live in Little Ferry, New Jersey, in southern Bergen County only a stone's throw from the Hackensack River. I found this forum after i identified what i think is a juvenile Eastern Milk Snake who lives under the wooden steps that lead to my apartment door. My backyard is paved, and is basically a junkyard of my landlord's old cars, but there's a bit of overgrown vegetation in the rear of the lot.
I keep a container garden, and I first discovered the snake when I slid one of the wooden planters out to clean up some dead leaves. He scooted under the stairs where the macadam is all cracked apart and there's holes that i'm sure go into the basement of the house. I should mention that the house was built in the late 19th century, and it shows it's age. Anyway, i've seen him regularly the past few days, under the boards of the stairs. He's about two feet long but still slender, tan colored with medium brown spots outlined in black.
Is it possible that this is an Eastern Milk Snake? This is a fairly industrial area, although wildlife abounds around the river. It's also been raining all month and the yard floods up. I'm thinking he came up towards my garden and the house to escape the water. There are a bunch of cats and raccoons around; is this little guy going to make it?
thanks
