1st set of babies!

4everherpn Jul 30, 2004 11:59 AM

Today after making a "B" on my organic chemistry I came home to find more good news. The suspected gravid female was indeed gravid. I was blessed with 10 baby Storeria dekayi. Cool little snakes. I now have them seperated from the adults. I guess I better start finding some small food items. Any suggestions? They are so cool.

Storeria: All of a colubrid you could want wrapped around your finger.

Congrats! I have 2 very thick female browns that I'm hoping are gonna drop as well. Although, the babies won't be pets, they are used for other reasons. Newborn brown snakes are very small, as you know, they will eat slugs, worms, and snails. I think your best bet is to feed them slugs. They grow quickly, most babies reach about 6 inches in length before entering hibernation.

That is pretty cool man. You are pretty knowledgeable on Storeria. I don't have many slugs so what I might do is get some worms (preferably red wigglers) and cut them up into smaller baby sized pieces. Will they eat right away or can I wait until they have their first shed?

Hello, from my experience, the best time to catch the slugs are either dawn or after mid-night when the grass is still wet, I can easily find the slugs hang on the grass or sticking on the retaining wall between mid-night and dawn.

Regarding to feed your baby snakes, you may need to cut the worms or slugs in very very tiny pieces because they have difficult time to swallow, Try to keep the pieces wet as they dry out quickly and place them on a piece of wax paper (such as non stick cooking parchment paper from supermarket) in front of the baby snake. If they are not placed on wax paper they stick to the paper towel or plastic cage bottom and are impossibe for the snake to pull off. You don't want the food stick with the substrate either because it is harmful to the snake's digestion. Have fun with your baby snakes.

That is a good tip using wax paper. Did not think of that. I am going to attempt feeding them tomorrow after my chemistry quiz. I bet they are hungry by now. I'll let ya know how it faired.
