crocodile skink questions

Mothi Jul 30, 2004 02:07 PM

I have been wanting one for many years (probably 5 ), but I always end up pushing of purchasing them. So now I want to just go for it... (Let's hope I do this time since I have the money and supplies to be dedicated to them.) Since some information can change over time when better technique or information becomes available about their proper care, I am going to ask a few questions.

Here is the set-up I am planning:
20l tank (no lid though)
bed-a-beast type substrate
coconut hides and a few other types like pvc pipes and etc.
a water dish (with a floating sponge? I saw someones post saying they like to surf )
bowl for feeding mealworms (I can start a new culutre of these again)
calcium supplement (to dust mealworms. And I am aware on how to properly gutload foods before feeding.)
humidifier (bought this 1 year ago when I was planning on getting them and now I can put it to good use since it is still in box. I just need to buy some pvc to hook it up)

Does this sound okay so far?

What lighting do I need? They are nocturnal right? Any additional supplements I should dust their foods with? Can they eat baby dubia or discoid roaches? Do they need to be medicated with anything to ensure no parasites (whether internal or external)?

How do you tell gender apart? Do males get along or is a harem society best?

And also a fun question... If males don't get along, would they do okay establishing seperate territories in a 150g tank if there are multiple males and get along? Just curious...

Am I forgetting about anything? I have in the past kept leopard geckos, pictus geckos, pygmy geckos, gargoyle geckos, crested geckos, ball pythons, western hognosed snakes, pygmy chameleons, etc.... So I am not new to keeping reptiles... I will just be new to keeping crocodile skinks.

Well, i have been keeping my boy for 15 months already and he is doing great!

First tribs need a 20l tank, well ventilated with a lid. Then you put inside the tank a large bowl of water.Regular tap water because tribs dont have problems with chlorine.Inside the large bowl of water you put a sponge, a small kitchen sponge that floats because they love to surf on the sponge on the water!lol!
Then you put a hiding place, a towel paper tube for instance, because they love to hide. Then you put a bowl of mealworms because thats what they love to eat and thats all! Not complicated at all!I didnt put any substrate, only a decorated aquarium plastic paper for decoration.I included also some plastic plants and plastic little frogs only to make his cage more pretty!lol!

Im keeping my boy in the living room on the top of a closet, at room temp. When its not too hot ( 80-85F) i put him in his outdoors cage for half an hour, 3 times a week, in the morning because tribs do need sun light.

That's how I keep mine... except the sunlight... I didn't think they liked being out in the day but I've only had mine a few months.
