Convicts4Ever Jun 22, 2003 10:51 PM

Just thought I'd post an update on my FBT tads. They are growing fast and eating great deals of food! They are big and I have only lost 3 of them causes unknown, but water peram. are perfect for them. I can't wait for them to morph one day, and the suspence is KILLING me! I love the little guys so much! Thanks for reading!

I heard somewhere (and I don't know if it's true) that when FBTs are bred in captivity you won't get fire bellies, but yellow bellies instead. Is this true?

Thanks! They are going to be sold to people who want them and can actually provide the proper care. I've heard also that they develop yellow colored bellies because there's a lack of the foods that make up the pigmentation of the red bellies. I've also heard that if you feed the feeder insects a red color enhancer pigment, the babies can develop their red bellies after a while. I'll have to read into it, so I can get them to get their name-sake coloring. They normally sell for $10.00-$20.00 each in the area where I live, so I want to give people around my area the oportunity to purchase some Fire Bellied Toads that are Captive Bred, Well-Priced, Healthy, and Better Suited To Existance In Captivity. I don't want to breed these and other types of amphibians to make money, I want to breed them to improve on the species, improve on general health of the animals, and make sure less of them are removed from the wild. Sorry for the long post, I just get so thrilled when talking about my animals.

My son wanted to start keeping herps, actually what he really wants is a red eared slider turtle, but I told him he'd have to start smaller. We purchased 2 FBT from (and don't yell at me) Petco for $4 each. If he keeps them alive for a year (which will be in August) I told him we'd more seriously consider the turtle. We've bought books and printed all sorts of info on the turtle from the internet, and by August we might be ready, but I'm still trying to talk him into staying "smaller"

Good luck with your FBT tads and please keep us posted.

That's great! Kids should learn responsability, and what's better than something as a FBT! They are a lot less work than a RES turtle, and by having some FBTs he will learn how much fun herps can be. About you getting them from PetCo, I won't yell at ya; not everyone can get a FBT from a breeder, because there's not enough of them. As long as you picked out what looked like healthy ones, then you did alright. I'm glad you're teaching your son some responsability.

i have read in books that captive breed fbts have a demineshed orange to a yellow colored belly. some one said they get a grey belly but i have yet to hear any one or see pictures to prove that. $10 for a stupid fbt? j/k i got mine for $5 each at petsmart. they all are very healthy, some folks say their fbts wouldnt eat at first when they first got em, mine at as soon as i put a cricket in the tank!

I hardly ever come on this forum since I no longer have my FBTs. When I had the privaledge to raise 700 from eggs that my pair laid (over several cluthes of course), I was overjoyed but equally dismayed. See, I had no internet then, no one to consult, and no experience. And, I was a kid. I was determined to provide them the best that I could(I'd walk to pet stores and ask Q's that no one had the answers to, only guesses that I would worriesomely apply and pray over) Some has asked what I finally did with all the toads. Well, some made it into the hands of some other kids that promised to take good care of them(I shed a tear for each one), but most were purchased by local petstores that had managers that were very excited about the herp department. The babies did have lemon yellow bellies, not red and not grey. They were beautiful and I loved them the way you do yours! Be prepared for more. They seem to get more and more prolific. Though hardy, you seem to loose a few. Keep us posted, I am so happy for you. Don't be afraid to ask Q's-it doesn't mean you're making too many mistakes as someone once told me on another herp forum. It great we have a forum to learn, unlike when I was raising them and alone with my worries! Mom, finally made me sell everything off. It was one of the saddest days.Couldn't keep me from loving animals though. The next year, my 2 (supposedly)male rabbits had 58 bunnies .
