Any body breeding or keeping the King Ratsnake? Since New York State is planning to ban ALL Boids, I want to fill the void with some large colubrids. I just haven't decided which. Any help would be appreciated.

It has already passed the State Assembly and the State Senate. It only needs the governor's signature to become law on Jan. 1, 2005.
and there are several breeders, although I haven't seen any other ads lately.

The wild caughts have a rep. for musking. I've heard that in captivity, they calm down.
I've got a pair... I wouldn't describe them as calm, I guess. They're still babies though so I have some time. It's pretty sad when you can get a 7 foot ratsnake but not a rosy boa.

Yes, but that's politicians for ya! They do no research and vote based on feelings, not facts.

I keep King Rats. I had planned to breed them this year but unfortunately my male died a little after he came out of brumation. But anyway, I have a 3 year old female het for albino and another 2 males (also het) that will be 2 years old next season. So hopefully (maybe) next season I'll have some babies.
But anyway, carinata are great snakes in my opinion. They really don't musk at all if they are handled semi-regularly. And if they do, their musk is really no worse than many other ratsnakes. I would characterize them as a bit shy/squirrely but not much worse than a lot of other Asian snakes (like mandarins for instance). And a nice yellow and black one can be really gorgeous IMO.
Good Luck!
Here's my 3 year old female:
These are great snakes. I would not consider them in the same catagory as corns and kings. They are great feeders and do very well in captivity. I bred them this year but all my babies have been bought. Try Natural Selections in Miami, they got my last two females. Here is my link so you can see pictures of the adults.

By the way the babies are completely differently patterned. See the picture.
If I can just piggy back in another question - what are they like for cannibalistic tendencies ? Are they best kept apart ?
Thanks
Nick
