western fox with "lumpy" spine

scales Jul 30, 2004 11:18 PM

My yearling (almost) western fox has developed, for lack of a better descriptive term, lumps all along it's spine. Are these calcium deposits? Genetic defect? disease? It eats 1 good sized mouse pup a week, lives in a 20 gallon aquarium, full spec and seperate basking light...
I am at a loss here, I have no idea what is going on, and there isn't a herp vet within a 150 mile radius of here. (I tried one vet, who supposedly knew his herps, to get a health check on a couple baby beardies... first thing he said was, "what are these?"
The snake is active and a good feeder, drinks plenty of water.
I am desperate for advice, if there is treatment available I need to know. I am knowledgable enough to administer most medications, but as far as diagnosing this problem....
Please help if you can.

Take it in for an x-ray and see what the vet thinks. I've seen older snakes develop a few boney bumps along the top of their spine but generally not young snakes. I've also seen snakes with fused vertebrae from injuries (wild caught and rescues). My concern is if the calcification is increasing, it could limit the mobility of the snake.
Good luck, hope the vet can give you a definite diagnosis.
