Chameleons, is noise a stress factor?

voidix Jul 31, 2004 01:51 AM

I know that chameleons do have ears, but are at the same time practically deaf. They can sense vibrations in the air, but can this be a source of stress? I have my chameleon stationed in my room, but at nights I like to watch TV on a quiet setting. (I have trouble sleeping sometimes, and this helps). My question is, will this be ok for the chameleon, or should I move him to another room?

They don't have any external form of ears so I don't think sound, other than loud bass would be a factor. The light from the tv though could be, if it's shining right on or towards him.

Right, they don't have ears. The sense or feel vibrations so if a gravid female is in a tree with a male, she'll rock back and forth to get his attention and let him know that she doesn't want to mate with him.

I don't think that noise is a terrible stress factor. Just last Friday my little cousins came over because it was my aunt's 31st birthday and my mom and family threw her a small party. Anyway three of the brats (ages 3-7) dart in my room, at my dad's command, with those poppers that look like wine bottles and little guns and just go off and shoot 'em at me. Every little bag of those things they could find were popped and I was covered in string and confetti. And those suckers were pretty loud! My rats were plenty freaked out. lol But my cham, who was out on his new ginormous dracaena, didn't take any notice of the little buggers, he just kept on snaggin his silkies from the leaves and couldn't care less.

ok, thanks for the replies. The tv is on very low, so I don't think it will hurt even if he DOES have ears. Also, the chameleon can't see the TV from his cage, so the flickering light shouldn't be a problem. Besides, he is always alseep on the same exact little leaf every night (very cute) by the time I come in, so I don't think he even knows it is on!

Thanks for the input

ive had my juvenile panther in my bedroom with my heavy duty surround sound system for a couple of months now. i dont usually turn it up TOO loud but its not exactly whisper-quiet either. i am a novice keeper (first panther, had a young veiled for a few months before him) so im no expert, but he doesnt seem to have any sort of negative reactions to my watching tv late at night or listening to music etc... as far as i can tell he is healthy and happy. hope this helps.
