Skin problems?

russ1066 Jun 22, 2003 11:49 PM

I think Santiego has a skin fungas , From to either the green moss I put in his hide box or the hide box Its self. I have the medication for this (Its a blue liquid). Does Any body use a permanent hide box ? I think that the humidity in the hid box may have caused this . There are un treated 2-4 pieces in the hide box . I think there is mold on them . He`sgoing tothe vet on tuesday, and Im emailing my vet on this tonight. Any feed bck would be great . Russ

Have you ever seen a 2x4 laying out and wet...they can be pretty gross. I have been very happy with clay plant saucers for a hide box. Go to the ProExotics site and they have a little video about how to whack a "door" in it with a hammer. I have used them for Tegus and a bullsnake. I don't think it matters much if they are glazed or unglazed...I've used both. Put a couple in the hot and cool ends and you are ready to go. They make a neat basking spot too. Hope this helps.

i think everything i have ever read about tegus says... " hide place should be moist. but not wet to the touch" meaning... if you spray it directly once, and let it set for a minute, the wood soaks up the moisture but keeps it in the cage. NOT... spray over and over until bedding and hiding place are soaking wet. i think this is probably one of your problems if you do happen to spray in the hide spot, only do it a couple of times as to not let the water stay in the wood for more than a day or so. it will only mold if it is wet for a long period of time.
oh yeah, and never put in un sterilized wood. just dunk it in the tub for half an hour with a 1:10 mix of bleach to water and let it dry.
