Question about feeding wax worms

waldo Jul 31, 2004 01:56 PM

I keep hearing to feed wax worms sparingly, what exactly defines sparingly? once a week? once a month? My daughter feeds her 5 month old leo 1 waxie 2-3 times a week,I feed my 2 week old leo 1-2 waxies 3 times a week.Is this too much? My baby came from petco and is kinda skinny so I am trying to fatten him up.They both eat their crix and mealies with no problem,I just don't want waxie addicted leo's.Thanks

Try to limit waxies to none at all. There is no benefit of feeding waxies and there are many downfalls. Feeding waxies to "gain weight" on your leo isn't a very good idea, as leos who are underweight are lacking in vitamins, minerals, proteins, fibers, etc. Waxies are pretty much water, and fat, they have extremely low nutrition content and contain a horrible Ca:P ratio. If you want to feed waxies go ahead, but remember there are numerous better choices. If you want to give your leo variety feed supers, silkies, or butterworms.

I have to admit I spoil my leo's and overfeed them with waxies (at least during breeding season- they hardly ever get them in the winter) but waxies are more of a treat for reptiles. They are definately okay to include in their diet but think of them like twinkies. One every so often is okay but a whole bunch isn't very healthy. What you are feeding sounds okay for a growing juvi. As adults its better to cut back to a few a week. As long as mealies and/or crickets makes up 90-95% of your leo's diet, and you dust them with Ca and vitamin powders, the occasional waxie is okay.
I hope this helps!
