More Advice Required For Mating Veileds Please! (Experienced Veiled Breeders Required!)

chamellio Jul 31, 2004 07:11 PM

well as in my previous post my male veiled mounts my female vailed and just sits on her as if he has no idea what to do, i've shown him my other male to sort of tempt him to mate but no such luck, i leave it every 2 days before trying again.

Both females im trying to mate him with are showing receptive colouring and are fine when they see him, but as soon as he goes near them occasionally they hiss and gape at him but after mounting its fine, he tends to butt them slightly too which i hear is normal.

anyway have any experienced veiled breeders got any advice for me? and btw this is his first attempt at mating so could this be part of the problem?

Thanks again
Regards Chamellio

P.S heres another pic of him for those that didnt get to see him before!

I think it probably is due to this being his first time. Not all of my male Veileds mated their first times. They did things exactly as you are describing. One time I introduced a female to a male's cage and be turned black and dropped to the floor. He did great a couple of months later. I guess I would mate the females with the other guy and give the first guy a few more months to mature. He'll probably do fine the next time.

I've been breeding veileds for a few years now, and it sounds like you're doing everything right. However, it is uncommon, but yet possible, to have a male that will never mount the female. I once had a male that would do everything but the deed itself. I finally sold him after two years of trying. I have noticed that I get a better breeding response from males that have been raised up in individual cages. Some breeders keep all their offspring together in groups for a couple months. I've found that the males from these groups are the ones that don't breed as well when you first start them.
Just my own personal experience.
