Greatest substrate?

Eidechsemann Jul 31, 2004 10:46 PM

What is the all time best substrate for Corn Snakes? I bought a temporary crushed walnut shell sand but I know that is not ideal. Something that would hold the humidity...Thanks for any help.

Aspen or newspaper both work well.Your corn doesnt need high humidity.I picked some aspen up today at walmart for 3 dollars.I really like it better than the expensive name brands. It's small shavings means my corns wont get impacted if they accidently ingest it.Also you can spot clean aspen and I normally dont have to change it for 1 1/2 months which is a big time saver...Paul

All my cages have either bed a beast or carpet, although the shavings may be small it still carrys dust i wouldn't in their lungs, yuck. They like to burrow in the bed a beast, reminds me of the tremors movie

if you don't like paper....go with aspen.....

corns don't like high humidity......they do fine at normal levels......

........use a moist slightly hide if you want to give them a higher humidity place to get into.......

good luck

I was actually planning on breeding my two. Even when I provide a vermiculite "nest", I won't need the humidity? (In case I don't notice the eggs for a day or so? Of course, I would take them out as soon as I saw them...)

don't use vermiculite for nest..use sphagnum or peat moss even....

vermiculite is good for incubation..but I never put it in with a corn......just eggs.....

moss in the hide is good......

I give all my corns a hide....all year long....they love it and use it alot...not always..and all like them..but most do....

hidea are good "furniture" ..along with a piece of cork bark for shedding and also hiding and climbing on.....

...all I use........a box..with water bowl....gallon jug cut off and half full of moss...and a chunk of cork..all on paper....

have fun....

my personal preference is aspen shavings.
Easy to spot clean, acts as an extra hide, looks better then newspaper or paper towels and isn't very expensive.
