New rat rack

gmherps Aug 01, 2004 07:54 AM

I just had a friend build this for me. He did an excellent job, so much that I've ordered another one. It's so sturdy, and uses a double 5 gallon bucket gravity watering system, and it also uses the large mortar cement mixing tubs. 1.6-1.7 can EASILY be run in these tubs! With the buckets on top, total heigth is 7'5", and 54" wide. I'm even thinking about seeing if he can make a rack just for weanlings and up!
Let me know what you think.

Would love to see some close ups of the track assembly and one of the individual levels. I'm getting ready to build some of these for a friend of mine.

I'll take some more pics within a day to show actual building specs.

That's bad a--! I would like to use the same watering method for my snakes. Could you explain to parts of the watering system from start to finish?

For your snakes? I'm not understanding that. This is a rack and watering systems designed for rats. The system is as follows: 1- gallon bucket from Walmart. The rest of the system was and can be purchased from www.agselect.com, just look under the small animal watering systems. I bought 100ft of flex tubing, 25 3/16" barbed edstrom drinking valves, 40 3/16" barbed T's and L's for the curves from each level, and most importantly a tank connector to get the water from the bucket to the rats. I have now went to a 2, 5 gallon bucket system, and it lasts for about 10 days before refilling. Always buy 1-2 extra tank connectors because they sometimes break, but too often.
I'll get Bryon to post on here sometime to show ya'll how he did the rack.

Thanx! I'm not interested in the racks, just the watering system. I figure it worked on a closed resevoir feeding to a check ball but, if the tube is submersed in a snakes water dish (secured of course) coming from a closed tank, it should work in the same fashion as the water dish for a cat or dog using a 2 little bottle.

Thanx

Wow, that rack is suprisingly similar to the ones at "Exotics by nature". I know cause thats where I got the idea from as well. Your design is good but I think its a lot of wasted wood. Did you purchese the Argee tubs from Home Depot or from the manufacture. One tip for the next rack, tighten up the space between the tubs I use the 14 gal tubs and have them spaced 9 inches apart. That gives plenty of room for the food tray and and water system but leaves a overall heigth of 6 ft which is easier to work with. Also for other sizes Argee makes a 7 gal and a 45 gal tub that you could use for other size rats/mice. I myself have 49 cages in use for the purpose of breeding feeders. Keep up the good work.

The space between the levels is 3.5 inches. That's not alot of room. The top level tub is at exactly 5'10".

That is almost identical to our set up. We use the same exact tubs and watering system and do a 1.7 ratio and it works awesome. We feed Mazuri 6M and the rats are doing great!

Good luck!

nice rack,it's looks like you have lab blocks and dog food at different levels, how do you determine who gets what?

gmherps Aug 04, 2004 11:03 PM

I had some extra Harlan lab chow left over. I use Ol' Roy in the red bag from good ol' Walmart.
