Lighting in cages and day night cycles

tredding Aug 01, 2004 03:04 PM

I just brought home a new ball and the lady that I got him from said that I should not use white light at all unless I need to get the temp up. I have received conflicting info that they need a light to simulate day and night cycles. Unfortunately my apartment is pretty dark and ther is not much natural light. Should I go ahead with my plan to put the light on an 8 hour timer?
Thanks
Travis

First lesson - don't listen to most of what petstores say.

It's fine to provide the light - but not necessary. It would be for you, not your snake. They don't need it and will probably be sleeping during the say anyway. I provide my display tanks with light because I choose to. 8 hours is just fine as well. Besides, the light doesn't provide heat (just light), so not sure what the petstore was talking about.

I've never used a light, but some people do. Since ball's are nocturnal and their behavior is instinctive, I'm not sure of the need. If your set-up is in range then why bother.
