Unexpected Hatchling..Obviously there's more to learn about the genetics of bloods. Unfortunately this hatchling, blood x ghost, drowned in the egg. I checked the incubator first thing in the a.m. and saw one tiny slit. After the first slit I always cut a little window. When I started the cut, no motion, bad sign. I knew something was wrong. Drowned in the egg, the cord was wrapped around it's neck. You can see a kink in that area in the photo. The hatchlings all looked as expected, normals with obvious blood influence. This is the second clutch sired by my male blood and so far all the hatchlings look similar. More gray on the head, more red, deeper red, red on the ventral scales like a hypo, etc. Then this one that looks completely bloodred. Bloodred is not a recessive gene but the term het is often used to describe hatchlings that are blood crosses. If half the clutch looked this way, co-dominant would be a good way to describe the results. Only one hatchling and the female that produced this clutch is not het or an outcrossed blood. Strange, unexpected, but just goes to show that we are still learning about genetics.
So what do you think? Comments and opinions are welcome.
