bosc monitor eating habits

herplvr2004 Aug 01, 2004 07:48 PM

when my sav monitor grabs his prey he seems to hit and push it against the wall or ground or whatever is nearby. I was wondering if this normal or common or just a monitors different personality. Thank you for any input

Could be its trying to kill it. Could also be the prey is large and its using the walls as leverage to take it down.

could also be that walls are everywhere. Who knows?

Both mine did/do the same thing, even when feed fairly small prey. The only exeption is particularly soft bodied prey (i.e. catopillars). I've also seen it occasionally in leopard and pictus geckos. As well as anoles and tegus. So, I imagine it's a fairly common behavior. I've also seen it with some N. American snakes (garters, when feed fish, once in a while bullsnakes).
It's fun to watch though (or maybe I'm just sick?)

Normal. I see it as the monitor version of what turtles do with their front feet. My Savs both like to smear things around, crush roaches etc. Positioning them in their mouths and killing them for the final swallow.
I have a neonate milksnake that had a salamander as it's first prey.....silly thing would bang the sal against the wall instead of constricting. She did learn to constrict after the third feed...thank goodness. Though it was pretty entertaining to watch.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?
