Warning: Listen to a dummy and avoid tragedy with your pet box turtle

Dumbie Aug 01, 2004 08:20 PM

I cherished this Chinese Box Turtle who had been passed along to us. He had lived in various classrooms and was who-knew-how-old. Toga wasn't shy, he knew to ask for food.

Last year he escaped my preschooler son's attention and off Toga went on a one month adventure in the wilds of our backyards. We did find him!! Oh happy day! And what a hungry turtle.

Yesterday, he was scratching around and I thought, let me put him out for a bit so he can get some sun - needed for the Vit D. I put him a plastic pool, partly shaded. Glanced at him from the window, saw him moving around. An hour later went to retreive him and he was dead, presumably from the heat of the plastic.

I attempted to cool him, but he was gone. It really happened quickly.

I am devastated that my carelessness destroyed this beautiful creature that was in my care.

I buried him this morning.

I am so sorry, Toga.

I have to say that most people would not have admitted to that, so good for you. When I was younger, and didn't know better, I put my baby box turtles outside in a plastic tub and the same thing happened to them. I haven't really admitted to that myself, but it was a long time ago. I feel very bad for you to lose your precious turtle, and you didn't do it on purpose. I am very upset over him too, because it was a chinese box turtle, they are definately one of my favorite turtles in the world!
I am glad that you have told everone about your tragedy though. Good luck with future turtles.
