"growth" on hatchling ball python

chondro788 Jun 23, 2003 07:04 AM

Here is a pic of some sort of growth on one of my baby ball pythons. Unfortunatly this is a baby Pastel, so I really wish this was not here. If anyone has seen this befor let me know. It is about 1.5 inches from the vent on the side of the snake. When I first saw it, I was hoping it was still some yolk that was being absorbed, but it is on the side of the python. If you have any ideas as to what it is, that would be very helpful. It hatched this morning so I think I will check it this evening, and then call a vet. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jason

Just a guess, but it looks similar to an hemangioma. Hopefully, the vet will be able to remove it. You have a beautiful baby there. Good luck!

Well the vet agreed completely with you. So it will be removed once the animal is feeding. This way if there are other deformities that may cause the animal not to eat, we will no thave to do an uneeded surgeory. He also said this is genetic and will be passed to offspring, is this your opinion on this subject too?
Thanks, Jason

It's not, but I am not a reptile vet. In humans, they don't know what causes hemangiomas. Usually it's congenital, meaning a birth defect, but I have NOT heard of a study that has proven it genetic. Unless the Dr. has found other lesions in the baby, my view would be that it was a one time thing. Hopefully, it's just a vascular tumor externally, and they will take it off and he/she will just have a tiny scar.....and make more beautiful babies!
