PVC SUNNING CAGE

mommyof2greenigs Aug 01, 2004 10:25 PM

Ok the time has come for the babies to have new outdoors cages. I want to go with the PVC pipe and hardware cloth type of cage. Any suggestions on how to do it? I have been to IguanaDen and copied off some of the directions. Any suggestions or additional information on how to build one?

Also, Does anyone know where I can get coated hardware cloth? I had found some for their other cages but I cant find it around here anymore.

I bought rolls of plastic covered metal mesh at Home Depot. I think it's 2'x6'. I made a 6x4x2 cage (it had to fit in my car) and the materials cost me about $100.

One thing that is very important for the longevity of your cage is to make sure you use UV resistant zip ties (the black ones). I made the mistake of using normal ones, and had to replace them all (all 500 of them) by the end of the first season!

If I cant find the coated hardware cloth is the regular kind ok until I can find it? My boys are still pretty small (under 30 inches) and weigh around a pound and a half. Will it be ok for a temparary thing or should I head off in search of this stuff?

Personally, I would try to find the coated mesh. If your iguana decides he wants out, what is he going to do? Rub his snout against the mesh. The rubber coated version is much kinder to iguana noses than the metal...

well since we are talking about sunning cages, we are building tiny his final cage. and i dont want to use the reptarium for his outdoor cage anymore. i have a dog cage that is great size for tiny right now, but the holes in the cage are too big.

so... i have this screening that is strong!!! it is dogproof screening. will this block out too much uv???

thanks

Is it the black nylon mesh kind? Someone posted recently that that stuff blocks something like 50% of UV rays.
