Grow-a-frog question

skyewynters Aug 01, 2004 11:38 PM

Hi everyone!

Many of you seem to know a lot about the company, frogs, etc... My question is: I just put in an order (I am NOT in a restricted state) and I was wondering is there anything wrong w/ the company itself? (i.e. are they corrupt or anything?)

And also, will my frogs be easy (yeah, right LOL) to take care of? I got the duel tanks (two connected via a tube) and ordered 4 frogs. They didn't say this would be too many or anything, so I assumed it would be OK.

One more question: What should I feed them?

Thanks so much to those who respond :-D

Sincerely,

Skye

I think that it's kind of a scam. I bought my baby african clawed frogs for a mere $4.00 or so each at a pet store. The grow-a-frog company sells you a tank and a bunch of stuff that's really not the best valus, considering that I got my 30-gallon tank that the frogs are now in, for $30. I had them in the 10g tank for awhile til they outgrew it. So if they really are acfs, they'll need a bigger tank anyway, so it ight just be cheaper to buy the supplies at a pet store.
Unless they turn out to be african dwarf frogs; I would have to be sure which type they are. acf's can top 5 inches, and need a nice long tank to swim in, while you could keep a dwarf or two in a ten gallon.

Thanks for the info...It sounded a little expensive...but I still paid (those of you thinking to buy from grow-a-frog, I hope you read this! LOL)

I found out that they are Xenopus Laevis Laevis species (it's really hard to find out detailed information for this species)...So I'll just have to see what the heck to do in the future LOL

Thanks for the help!

i think one of the mojor concerns with grow a frog is that the tanks are too small, you would do good to buy a tank that you think is "bigger than nessesary" so that you know your frogs will not be cramped and will be happy for the rest of their lives. all that i have heard about grow a frog is that they have insanely small tanks for the animals they sell and that with that size tank you would have to clean it a lot!
good luck

Much thanks!

I'll make sure to keep an eye on their size and adjust tank size accordingly!

Again, thanks for the advice!

The rule as far as ACFs go is 7-10 gallons of water per frog. Buying tanks from Grow-a-Frog is a rip-off because keeping them in these tanks will kill them. Even the Big 'n Hoppy tank is only a little over three gallons.
I myself am hoping to get an original Grow-a-Frog kit and plan to transfer my frog to a ten gallon tank as soon as it's a froglet.
You can feed them Reptomin which can be found at Wal*Mart and probably any other store that sells pet supplies too. www.xenopus.com also sells specially formulated frog food. I've heard something called Shoi Kio is a god sent as frog food goes, but I have no idea where to get that.
Oh, and grow-a-frog ships a subspecies of Xenopus laevis known as Silurna tropicalis to restricted states. Silurna tropicalis requires a heated tank.
I find the most info on these can be found at aquaticfrogs.tripod.com
And the clawed frog group on Yahoo known as Froggy Friends would be more than happy to help you as well.

for restricted states, what's the difference between the xenopus Silurna tropicalis that they sell compared with the regular xenopus? Are you sure they give another variation of the frog to restricted states? Thanks
