baby chameleon rubbing and squinting his left eye

voidix Aug 02, 2004 12:01 AM

I noticed when I first got him that every once in a while he would squint his eye shut, and rub it on a leaf. I didn't think much of it at first, but I think that he is starting to do it more often now, and it he has been doing it for about 3 days. I just noticed tonight that he will leave his left eye closed for as long as a minute at a time, while still using the other. Does this look like serious problem? or does he just have a itchy eye from some dust or something? What should I do to help, anything?

do you have a ficus tree in there? I've heard of cases where the sap from the tree will irritate captive bred chameleons if they get it in their eyes..

as far as treatment i dont' know, but you need to find out what caused the problem, otherwise it'll just come back if its part of your current setup.

are you misting him??...inverting the eye and rubbing it is usually a normal behavior...mine does it every time i wet him down...if he's doing it all the time i would worry...take a look at the eye and see if there looks to be a problem but it sounds pretty normal to me

thanks for the replies. He had a good nights sleep, and seems to be doing better now. I haven't seen his close or rub is eye today, so I think he will be ok. Thanks for the input.
